Password encryption/decryption algorithms for Google Applications
This page describes various password decryption/encryption algorithms used by Google software to store Google Account passwords and Gmail passwords. If you just want to decrypt your Google Passwords stored on the local system without getting into too much detail, you can download and install our tool called Google Password Recovery:
Google Talk password decryption and encryption
Google Talk uses Gmail accounts to authenticate and login. Google Talk passwords are encoded/decoded using Crypto API. Encrypted Gmail passwords are stored by Google Talk in the registry. GTalk can store multiple accounts.
Gmail Notifier password decryption and encryption
Gmail Notifier is a small utility that is used to get notifications of new messages in your inbox. This utility will work correctly only if the Gmail password is saved on the system. Gmail Notifier stores encrypted passwords in the registry. Passwords are decrypted using CryptUnprotectData function. Gmail Notifier can only store one account password at any given time.
Google Desktop password decryption and encryption
Google Desktop stores Google Account password to reflect status of the Gmail inbox as well as to index the data located in your Gmail account. Google Desktop passwords are encrypted using CryptProtectData before storing them on a PC. Only one password can be stored on the system at a time.
Google Picasa password decryption and encryption
Google Picasa stores Gmail password or Google Account password to provide users automatic access and upload function to Picasa Web Albums.
Picasa uses a different encryption method to store the Google Photos password (Picasa Web Albums password). The password is encrypted/decrypted using a unique key through the RC1 encryption algorithm. The unique key is produced by making SHA1 hash of the Picasa Web Albums username. Encrypted password is stored in the registry. More on Picasa password decryption algorithm here.
Google Photos Screensaver password decryption and encryption
Google Photos Screensaver stores Gmail or Google password to download album photos to be shown with a screensaver. Google Photos Screensaver encrypts passwords using CryptProtectData before storing them on a PC. Only one password can be stored on the system at a time.
Google Toolbar password decryption and encryption
Google Toolbar stores Google passwords in the browser. See next section about Google passwords stored in browsers.
Google passwords stored by browsers
There is definitely a need to look for saved Google passwords in browsers because
