Even if you have already un-installed Miranda, there is still a good chance that you can recover the passwords for your accounts. Firstly, run the program, click "Recover password!" button and see if the program manages to automatically find and decrypt passwords.

Manual recovery from external files

You can use the From File button if the automatic recovery doesn't work or if you need to decrypt Miranda passwords from a database that has been moved from another hard drive or computer.

First thing - find the database which has your passwords stored. Windows Vista/Windows 7 location:

<system drive>:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Miranda\<profile-name>.dat

Windows XP location:

<system drive>:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Miranda\<profile-name>.dat

Earlier versions of Miranda stored the profile databases in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Miranda\

Once you located the profile database, copy it to the system where you have Password Recovery for Miranda installed and click on the From file button in the recovery window. Select your file in the Open File window and click OK. All passwords stored in the selected Miranda profile database will be decoded and shown on the screen.

Miranda passwords are encoded using the following encryption algorithm:

.dat files are used to store profile information, passwords and chat history.
First Miranda password cracker was made in February 2003 by uinC Team from Russia. This password finder used to search the whole database for passwords and does not work for the current version of Miranda anymore.
